Jon Butcher Axis
In 1983 Jon Butcher Axis released their debut self titled album on Polydor/PolyGram Records. Featuring their hit "Life Takes A Life" then you had "Ocean In Motion", "New Man", this was pretty much each song a hit w/ the listener.
This debut album was very popular in Boston when it came out. Jon Butcher who's not from Boston but formed his band here was well known in the local clubs and popular w/ radio station WBCN. From The Rat, The Metro to The Channel Jon Butcher Axis was the band to see. Jon's charisma won audiences over and his guitar playing was a work of art. Of course people pointed out the Hendrix comparison as Jon have quoted as saying "Being black and playing a Stratocaster created certain inevitable comparisons, particularly in the early days".
I remember back in college being introduced to this album. A classmate gave me this album to listen too. She was a big fan & seen him in concert a number of times. As soon as I put the needle down & heard the intro to "Life Takes A Life"
I became a fan as well. During this time New Wave and Punk was the popular music but this three piece band was hard rock. Jon's vocals shows emotion from "Life Takes A Life' to "We Will Be As One." The instrumental "Sentinel" shows the powerful talent of this Boston band. It's one album I always go back too.
