Along
Came A Spider
Alice goes to his conceptual side on this CD. It sort of “Welcome
To My Nightmare” style w/ “Eyes of Alice Cooper” sound.
This story is about a serial killer named Spider who wraps his victims
in silk taking 4 left legs and 4 right legs.
This story starts off w/ an intro of a women saying
"We found his diary today. He wrote in great
detail,
how cleverly he planned all of the killings.
How precisely he executed his insane fantasies.
It was all so perfect except for one thing..."
as the songs go on it’s through the eyes of Spider. “I Know
Where You Live” is Spider following his prey.
"I like to watch from my car
I want to make sure you don’t go far…”
“Vengeance Is Mine” has guest Slash on guitar. This sounds
like the single they are promoting.
“Wake The Dead” Ozzy Osbourne co-wrote. It does have a bit
of that Ozzy sound. They even say Ozzy played harmonica on this track.
There are no credits of Ozzy on this CD other than writing credits but
maybe a piece that small he didn’t want to be mentioned.
“Catch Me If You Can” is another great number as Spider
taunts the police and victims.
“..which limb will I chose
which one gets sawed in half
which leg would you lose
to an arachnophobic psychopath…”
‘Killed By Love” is the closest thing to a ballad. I love
Alice’s vocals on this number. I wish he had more verses on this
song.
Which takes me to “I’m Hungry” one of the weakest
songs on this CD. Sort of repetitive in the chorus that I wish they
had more words than just gimme gimme gimme…it sort of reminds
me of a Spinal Tap song.
“The One That Got Away” opens up w/ one of the best lines
of a song.
"You look like you’d fit in the
trunk of my car…”
Alice’s daughter Calico helps out in a talking scene as she plays
one of his preys that got away.
“Salavation” is the “Steven” track of this CD.
Alice does a good job in this song it could of came from “The
Last Temptation” lp. Asking if he had any chance of salvation.
I was surprised I didn’t hear a choir in the background.
“I Am The Spider” an excellent closing song w/ Alice using
his menacing vocals.
As the Epilogue Spider confesses
"Well, they found my diary today. They
were appropriately appalled
at the discovery of the eight victims. They're now putting it all together.
Women wrapped in silk with one leg missing. Eight legs, one body, silk,
spider, brilliant!"
"We've been in this cell for 28 years Steven. We couldn't have
done all those horrible things. Yes, I know. I know what you always
say.
You trap, you kill, you eat. That's what a good spider does.
You trap, you kill, you eat.
You trap, you kill, you eat."
When I heard Alice mention Steven’s name it gave me chills.
Artwork: The artwork
is pretty cool. Designed by Piggy D who plays w/ Rob Zombie. The cover
shows a sinister profile of Alice w/ his enhanced spider make up that
is black make up, silver outline w/red eyelids sort of like the spider
blade that is created inside the CD book.
It opens in a tri-fold on the first panel is a small picture of Alice
as a kid w/ a fly on it. I know this is Alice because it was in his
bio “Alice, Me” and in his Welcome To My Nightmare tour
book. Also the first panel looks like a children’s school book
open. Title “Along Came A Spider” w/ illustration of a spider
w/ a skull head. On the booklet is red crayon label “Blood”
as the color. In crayon is a primitive drawing of a knife that the spider
is holding and the Spider blade icon. Under “This book belongs
to…” is scrawled the name Steven.
The middle panel is a metal w/ flies and splatter blood all over except
of an outline of the spider blade once laid.
Third panel that holds the CD is an open white line notebook w/ sketches
of the spider blade and notes to improve it. Also a picture of young
Alice again the same photo but this time someone drew Alice spider make
up on it & signed it “Steven” at the bottom.
The back side has a picture of Alice w/ the lines ‘You Trap You
Kill You Eat in what looks like a ransom letter someone would use to
disguise their handwriting. The back panel holds the song tacks w/a
photo of Alice holding a medical clamp w/ a fly trapped in it.
The booklet is also one of the best designs. It reminds me of each song
as a B Movie poster.
The cover of the CD booklet is actually the cover of the vinyl. That
is a photo of Alice reading you a bedtime story titled “Along
Came A Spider”
Each song lyric is in print and readable along w/ the credits. There
are some really cool pictures of Alice
Like the “Catch Me If You Can” page has an eerie mug shot
of Alice. ‘The One That Got Away” shows a close up of Alice
about to eat the fly trapped in the medical clamp.
The back page gives a salute to Welcome To My Nightmare as the subhead
reads above the title “The Horror that He Brings..The Horror Of
His Sting! The line taken right out of “The Black Widow”.
